Kyoshi aka Bell’s adoption listing photo

Kyoshi

Kyoshi’s story begins in a neighborhood in Ankara, where she was left behind by some people in streets with small local shops. After surviving on the streets for a short while, one of the shopkeepers in the neighborhood takes her in. Not long after, together with WOF Rescue, they arrange for her to move to a private shelter called Koyun Garipleri they collaborate with. There, she is given a new name ‘Bell’ inspired after Bell Hooks.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the story, Arzum and Barış are struggling with their sweet dog Earendil, who was rescued from the streets after a car crash that broke her two paws. While she is the sweetest dog ever, they suspect she was also abandoned to the streets and never fully overcame her separation anxiety for five years even though Arzum and Baris got help from many trainers specialising in this area. Whenever she was left home alone, in distress she would bark endlessly, leaving them unsure of what to do. During periods when they did dog sitting, however, they noticed something interesting: whenever another dog was in the house, Earendil was relaxed and didn’t bark at all.

That realization brought forward their plans to adopt a second dog. Through a friend, they got in touch with Cemre, a member of WOF Rescue.

“Now, close that book and give me a belly rub, hooman.”

On their first trip to Ankara, the couple felt a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation. At the shelter, they met Bell (later named as Kyoshi) for the very first time. Later, before returning to Amsterdam, they spent a few days together at their home in Ankara. During this time, Kyoshi was very tense and frightened of almost everything.

Then the trial period began, and hopeful that everything would work out, they returned to Amsterdam together to start fostering Kyoshi with hopes of making it a permanent adoption.

The first days were challenging. In a completely new place, surrounded by unfamiliar animals, Kyoshi struggled with anxiety. She was aggressively protective of the bed she accepted as her new place and her food. For about a week, she stayed in her crate at night. Slowly but surely, though, she began adjusting to her new home. Over time, she gained confidence outdoors as well and started to relax.

Today, Earendil and Kyoshi are best friends. Earendil’s separation anxiety has faded away and their happiness is written all over their faces.
