Lady

Lady was living on the streets in Zonguldak, Northern Turkey, surviving on bread and scraps left by volunteers. She had clearly had puppies and was extremely malnourished, with matted fur, patches missing, and sore, uncomfortable skin. Despite everything, she was incredibly friendly, and volunteers took her in. A UK-based registered charity, Angels for Animals Foundation, agreed to take her under their care.

Lady appeared to be a Flatcoat Retriever, and at the vet she was treated for a tick-borne disease called Ehrlichiosis and scabies. Thankfully, she tested negative for all other major diseases and was otherwise healthy. Once she recovered, she travelled to the charity’s boarding facility near Istanbul, where her sweet, happy, and playful nature quickly shone through. She played well with other dogs and began learning to trust humans.

Skye’s family had supported the charity since it began, founded by their friend and lawyer Katie Harrison. At the time, they already had two rescue Golden Retrievers, but when Lady became available for adoption in July 2021, Skye knew she had to be part of their family. She started as a foster, but it quickly became clear that saying goodbye would be impossible. Lady formed a strong bond with them right away.

Lady had to learn basic manners and house rules, from not counter surfing and stealing food to staying within gates, but she was clever, eager to learn, and full of joy. Now she is the light of Skye’s life. Even at around six years old, she still plays like a puppy, runs for miles, rolls around with the other dogs in the garden, and radiates an infectious zest for life. People cannot believe where she came from when they meet her.

Skye encourages anyone to open their heart to adoption, especially street or shelter dogs who have endured so much. They need our help more than ever. Through Lady, Skye found a community of people who share the same passion for giving dogs the lives they deserve.
