Spike’s -formerly Pepe- adoption listing photos by WOF Rescue

A photo from his foster home.

Spike

It was late April when Alexandra first saw Spike -formerly Pepe- on verhuisdieren.nl, and she immediately knew she had to meet him.He was rescued by WOF Rescue and was fostered by none other than Çağla from the organization.

Alexandra went to see him for the first time on April 23, and the very next day, she returned with her boyfriend, her sister, and her sister's dog, Layla. Layla is also a rescued dog, adopted from Romania. She used to be incredibly difficult due to her severe anxiety and fear of people and everything around her. Because of Layla, Alexandra and her family were already deeply familiar with how an anxious dog behaves, so they knew they had to take things slow. To their surprise and relief, Spike did so beautifully with Layla that Alexandra made the decision right then and there to bring him home.

The journey back was their first real hurdle. Spike was terrified of public transport, having to brave both a train and a tram ride, but he managed it bravely. The moment they made it back home, a shift happened. He started exploring immediately, sniffing around with Layla by his side. Alexandra noticed right away that Layla's presence made him feel much less anxious, which brought everyone so much joy.

In those early days, his curiosity was undeniable. He would constantly come around to sniff them, trying his hardest to approach, but he was still too scared to let anyone pet him. Since Alexandra is not working at the moment, she was constantly at home with both dogs. Spike got very, very comfortable with her, choosing to constantly stick by her side and Layla's. He cried a lot during that first week, and while he still does sometimes, it is much less now. He is quite the little complainer.

It has been almost three weeks since he joined their family, and in this last week especially, his true personality has started to bloom. He has developed this incredible sassiness. He will just sneak over to the corner of a door and stare at you until you notice him, only to disappear in a flash because he is scared of being looked at. His poses are equally sassy, sometimes making Alexandra think of a drag queen.

Spike and Alexandra

Spike and Layla, nap time.

Peeing on your own leg may cause more often bath times. Just saying.

He is still technically a puppy and does not fully know how to be a dog yet. His ears simply will not stay down; they are constantly flipped over like he is trying to hear every single sound in the world. He is also incredibly clumsy. He will literally hit his head against anything, slipping and falling constantly. Even his sleep habits are comical. He will fall asleep sitting up with his head raised, waking up right before his head hits the ground, repeating this until he eventually just bangs his head on the floor. Bathroom breaks are just as funny, as he often pees on his own leg because he is not paying attention and forgets to stand properly.

Despite the clumsiness, he is exceptionally smart and is learning so quickly. After just the first week, he started replying to his new name. Alexandra spends a lot of time training him and Layla, and she is proud to say he has learned how to sit, go down, and is now learning to come on demand. The funniest part is watching him try to obey. She might tell him to sit, and he will just be bouncing around the room, inching toward a sitting position, only to suddenly burst back up. He bounces around, so excited and utterly confused, looking at Alexandra as if to ask what exactly she wants him to do.

When he is excited, his whole body shows it. He wags his tail so extremely that his entire butt moves along with it. Sometimes that excitement spills over onto Layla. He will bounce and land right on her, or slap and push her with his legs, and she gets absolutely sick of him sometimes. But he also has his refined moments. Amazingly, he is the first dog Alexandra has ever had that lets her cut his nails and trim his paws, actually enjoying the process as if he is getting a luxurious pedicure.

Spike has truly changed Alexandra's life for the better. He is the absolute cutest, often coming right up to her face to sniff around before licking her cheeks and hands relentlessly just to get attention. He is also extremely jealous. If Alexandra goes to Layla to pet her and give her kisses, Spike will push both of them out of the way, forcing himself in front of Alexandra to make sure he gets his share of hugs and kisses too.

He is a very sassy, cuddly, cute little man who is still learning what it feels like to have a family that loves him. He is still very anxious, but seeing how far he has come in only two and a half weeks is deeply moving. Knowing that Layla is a completely changed dog after having her for a year, Alexandra cannot even imagine how much better Spike will get in a year from now. She loves him so very much.
